How to Use our Wallpaper Calculator (Step-by-Step Instructions)

It’s built to be dead simple, whether you’re working in metres, feet or inches. Here’s exactly how to get accurate results in under a minute.

  • Choose your unit of measurement at the top (Meters, Feet or Inches).
  • Enter your Room Dimensions: width, length and wall height. The tool automatically calculates the total room perimeter and gross wall area.
  • Input your Wallpaper Roll Size: roll width, roll length and (if you know it) the price per roll.
  • Under Deductions & Advanced, tell it how many doors and windows you have so it can subtract those openings. Set your wastage buffer — we default to 10 %, but you can bump it higher for tricky rooms.
  • Pick your Pattern Repeat option: No Pattern (random alignment), Straight Match or Drop Match. This is the part most people miss, and it makes a big difference to the final roll count.
  • Hit CALCULATE
Free wallpaper calculator tool interface – enter room dimensions, roll size and pattern repeat

You’ll see the total rolls required (with safety margin already built in), estimated total cost, and a breakdown: room perimeter, gross wall area, net surface area and useful strips per roll.

Benefits of Using Our Wallpaper Calculator

Sure, you could guess or do the math on the back of an envelope — but here’s why our wallpaper calculator is a much smarter (and faster) choice:

  • It factors in pattern repeat automatically, so you don’t end up short on a drop-match design.
  • Doors, windows and a realistic wastage buffer are already handled — no more surprise extra trips to the store.
  • You get an instant cost estimate, which makes budgeting painless.
  • It works for standard rooms, accent walls, or oddly shaped spaces.
  • Best of all, it’s completely free and takes the stress out of ordering.

The result? You order only what you actually need instead of padding your order “just in case.”

How to Measure Your Walls for Wallpaper (Detailed Guide)

Accurate measurements are the foundation of every good result. Grab a tape measure, notepad and pencil.

How to Measure Your Walls for Wallpaper
  • Measure the height in at least three places (left, middle, right) and use the tallest figure. Ceilings are rarely perfectly level.
  • Measure the width of every wall you plan to paper. Add them together for the total perimeter.
  • Note doors and windows — our tool subtracts them automatically, but measure their widths and heights just in case.
  • For sloped ceilings or stairwells, measure the longest wall height and the full run of the wall.
  • Always measure twice.

Pro tip: Exclude baseboards and crown moulding from your height, but include any trim areas that will be covered.

Understanding Wallpaper Rolls, Coverage & Pattern Repeat

Wallpaper rolls come in different sizes depending on where you buy them. In most of Europe, Australia and India a standard roll is roughly 0.53 m wide by 10 m long. In the US you’ll often see single rolls (about 0.68 m × 4.6 m) or double rolls.

  • Coverage is simply width × usable length after trimming. Our calculator shows “Useful Strips per Roll” so you know exactly how many full drops you’ll get from each roll.
  • Pattern repeat is the vertical distance before the design repeats.
  • No Pattern / Random Match — least waste, easiest to hang.
  • Straight Match — pattern lines up horizontally at the same height on every strip.
  • Drop Match (offset) — the pattern drops by half a repeat on the next strip, which can double the waste on large designs.

Always check the label for the repeat measurement. If it’s 50 cm or more, you’ll need extra rolls — our tool builds that in automatically. For a clear breakdown of match types, Tempaper’s guide is excellent.

Manual Calculation Method

Prefer to double-check by hand? Here’s the straightforward formula we use behind the scenes.

  1. Gross wall area = perimeter × height
  2. Subtract doors and windows for net area.
  3. Add your wastage buffer (10–20 % is standard).
  4. Divide by the coverage of one roll (width × length).
  5. Round up to the next whole roll.

Example: 4 m × 3 m room, 2.5 m height, 0.53 m × 10 m rolls, 10 % wastage, straight match.

Perimeter = 14 m → Gross area = 35 m².

After 10 % buffer ≈ 38.5 m².

One roll covers ~5 m² usable → you need 8 rolls (rounded up).

Our calculator does all this instantly and accounts for the pattern repeat adjustment.

Wallpaper Installation Tips & Mistakes to Avoid

Even with perfect quantities, the installation can still go wrong. A few smart habits can make all the difference.

  • Prep the walls: clean, smooth, and primed. Never paste over old wallpaper or flaking paint.
  • Start with a plumb line or laser level — walls are rarely straight.
  • Cut strips with a sharp blade and plenty of overlap for trimming.
  • Work from the lightest to darkest if using multiple rolls from the same dye lot
  • Book the paper (fold it paste-to-paste) for the time recommended on the roll so it relaxes and expands properly.

Common mistakes? Miscalculating rolls (we’ve all done it), ignoring the pattern repeat, rushing the first strip, or using the wrong adhesive. The Spruce has a great list of designer-noticed mistakes worth reading before you start.

Wallpaper Calculator FAQs

Our calculator is extremely accurate when you enter real measurements and the correct pattern type. It includes a built-in safety margin, but always order one extra roll for repairs or future touch-ups.

Yes — our tool does it automatically so you don’t over-order. Just enter the total number of each.

Measure the tallest height and the full wall lengths. The calculator still works; just add a higher wastage buffer (15–20 %) for irregular spaces.

Absolutely. Just enter the exact roll size from the product specs and choose the right pattern match.

10 % is fine for simple rooms. Add 15–20 % for large patterns, drop matches, or rooms with lots of corners and obstacles.

Yes! Enter the width of the single wall (or total width if papering multiple accent walls) and the height. It adjusts everything accordingly.
